There are a lot of things in this world that are inevitable. There’s death. There are taxes. There’s change in general. However, I don’t think anywhere on that list you’ll find a standalone Groot movie. Well, there’s at least one person out there who disagrees with me, and that’s actor Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy, the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and the even further upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
When promoting his latest film, xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Diesel was asked if he would be up for doing a standalone Groot film. As implied, his answer was a little surprising.
“It’s something that James Gunn has talked about and it’s something that I know he would love to do. Sure, I think it could be very interesting. I think it’s inevitable. I think — you know, that character is so enigmatic and he was already one of the most unique characters in the Marvel universe. And I think what Marvel has done, primarily what James Gunn has done, has started to realize that character and he’s exceeded beyond expectations. I think he’s just such an interesting character and there’s so much to learn about him. And I’d love to go back to his planet and learn more about him and I think the world would. He’s really a genius on a lot of levels, it’s just that we can only hear him say ‘I am Groot’ because of our sophistication level, not his.â€
While it wasn’t necessarily surprising to hear Diesel say that Groot should get a spinoff film — I’m fairly sure he’d be in favor of his Saving Private Ryan character getting a spinoff movie, if asked — but it’s the “inevitable†comment that throws me off. Given that Groot generally only says three words, I feel like he’d at least need the base of a Rocket Raccoon to keep the film centered. His comments, in all honesty, come across as quite ridiculous.
Though as much as I make fun of this, if James Gunn were to declare his enthusiasm to jump on board the project, I may very well rethink my stance on this. Even the dumbest of ideas can turn into something pretty cool if executed well. Marvel Studios themselves proved that when they were able to turn their B-list characters into marketable movies.
Never say never, I guess, but I do think there are more interesting properties out there to exploit.
