Soccer commentator and former Spanish fighter pilot Patricia Campos led an extraordinary life. Her life is so fascinating that her story was part of the anthology graphic novel Voices That Count retelling the stories and experiences of women around the world.
This stunning anthology (a collection of nine short stories) highlights and uplifts women’s voices, collecting their stories of life, love, and empowerment. Interacting with everything from the realities of gender imbalance in the workplace—through a gender-flipped lens—to toxic beauty standards taking a toll on the body image of your girls, Voices That Count gives women a space to recount their struggles and triumphs.
Campos’ story looks into her life as part of the hyper-masculine world in both the military and the sporting world. As the first Spanish female Navy pilot, she was shunned by other military personnel despite her historic achievements. In a shift in her career, she entered the soccer world in which she faced the same situations as a woman. Not until she lived in the United States, did the equality in women’s sports uplifted her to continue the profession. Eventually, her destiny took her to Uganda, where she aspired to young women in the participation of soccer despite opposition from older generations and gender-focused roles.

LRM Online’s Gig Patta chatted with Patricia Campos about the anthology series and her life both as a fighter pilot and soccer coach.
Patricia Campos served as an aviator for the Spanish Arm Forces for eight years. She rededicated herself as a soccer coach from her other passion in her university days and was the captain of the women’s team at Naval Station Rota. She relocated to the United States to become the first women to coach a team at a professional level with the Carlsbad United F.C. Today, she is a sports commentator and periodically travels to Uganda for non-profit projects for the empowerment of children, and women, and coaching various amateur teams.
