Bettany’s mystery cameo has become something of a white whale to WandaVision fans. If you remember, Paul Bettany had teased he got to work with someone he never has before who he admires greatly. To begin with fans had convinced themselves this was everyone from Al Pacino to Patrick Stewart. Here is what Bettany actually said in an interview with Esquire.
“Truth is, of all of the characters we were trying to keep secret, a lot of them got out through leaks. There is one character that has not been revealed. And it is very exciting. It is an actor I’ve longed to work with all of my life. We have some amazing scenes together and I think the chemistry between us is extraordinary and fireworks on set.”
However, after this week’s latest episode, another theory came to light. Many fans, including myself think that Bettany was talking about himself and the fact White Vision showed up. In other words he never got to work with Paul Bettany before, who he greatly admires. Personally I think it fits Bettany’s humor. So what did WandaVision director Matt Shakman have to say?

The director spoke with Huffington Post recently and said this when asked.
“I’m gonna let Paul Bettany answer that question. He dug himself this hole. He can get out of it,”
Asked again by the outlet, Shakman replied.
“I don’t know. We’ll have to let Paul answer that question.”
Now, I could be wrong, interpret this for yourselves. However, to me this is more evidence supporting the White Vision theory. Why would Bettany have dug himself a hole if there really was some amazing cameo (outside of Doctor Strange, according to rumors)? It would have been far easier for Shakman to simply say he did not know what Bettany was talking about, without the hole digging section.
There are no guarantees here, and I know a lot of fans will be disappointed if this is the end of this mystery. However, other than Bettany’s comments themselves, there really is nothing to hang our hat on here. I think fans may have just let their imaginations run a little wild on this one. But who knows, maybe I’m the one about to be proved dead wrong come Friday?
Where do you stand on Bettany’s mystery cameo? Is Shakman being smart, or letting us down gently? As always leave any thoughts below.
