Jac Schaeffer, WandaVision showrunner comments on Mephisto, finally. Many, many fans were convinced that the Mephisto character was behind everything in Westview. To be fair, there were more than  a few hints that were clearly designed to lead fans in that direction. However, I know by the last few episodes I don’t think any at LRM was really still expecting Mephisto to show up. Fans had begun to use Mephisto as a meme towards the end, however I’ll bet a few still hoped the character might show up.

However as far as Schaeffer is concerned, a big bad like Mephisto was never needed in WandaVision. To begin with, when everyone thought someone was making Wanda live in Westview, sure. But towards the end, it became clear that not even Agatha all along. It was a simply grief which allowed Wanda to tap into abilities she did not understand. Agatha clearly had her own agenda, but she did not make the Hex and if anything might have saved everyone by causing problems within Wanda’s vision (no pun intended).

Here is what Schaeffer said with regards to Mephisto when she spoke to Deadline.

“We didn’t think this series needed a big bad. I mean, the big bad is grief, you know, and that’s the story that we were telling, and then we got a bonus baddie in the form of Agatha Harkness who ended up facilitating Wanda’s therapy, so yeah, I think we feel pretty good about that.”

Now that WandaVision is over, I agree with Schaeffer. However, I am intrigued by what could be out there thanks to Wanda now. I keep thinking about Agatha’s line about how Wanda does not know what she has unleashed. I still think Strange and Wanda will need a trip to find Agatha at some point in Multiverse of Madness, but who knows?

Could some of the imagery and Easter eggs be pointing towards someone like Mephisto or Nightmare next? Nightmare has long been a rumored villain within Multiverse of Madness, but rumors is all we have on that front.
