We May Have To Wait A While For John Wick 4, Says Director Chad Stahelski

John Wick 4 may get pushed back from its May 2021 date.

It’s hard to believe that John Wick is a bona fide franchise. Nothing against it, but I remember the weeks leading up to its release. It had virtually no hype surrounding it. While people loved Keanu Reeves, he hadn’t exactly made a big hit in recent memory. It looked fine, but it didn’t necessarily feel any different than your average, run-of-the-mill action flick. Oh, how wrong we all were. It may have had a simplistic story, but that worked very much in its favor. It had a simple story in a wonderful world to play in.

Two films have come out since then, both about as well-received as the first. A TV show based on the Continental Hotel, and John Wick 4 is in the works. The film in question is slated for May 21, 2021…but how feasible is that release date?

“Between how much we want to expand the John Wick — let’s just call it a ‘franchise’, I guess — and the pandemic, I couldn’t tell you a release date for the next one. I mean, Matrix was only four weeks in when this all happened. So, Keanu’s gotta go finish his commitment up on The Matrix, which is a big deal and which I think will probably take him until the end of the year. Then we have to go into our prep mode and then we’ll start. So release dates, I’m sure with every production from Dave’s stuff to our stuff, who knows right now.”

In short…it doesn’t sound like he knows. Stahelski pretty much confirmed they won’t be able to shoot until the year’s end. That’s assuming the pandemic subsides as we all hope. That means they’ll only have a handful of months to shoot and edit it. Is it possible? Yes. Is it probable? I don’t see it.

Frankly, it sounds like Stahelski is painting a picture for us that it will likely be delayed, but is leaving it to the powers that be. After all, there’s no point in jumping the gun on a release date if you have no real authority to do so.

I think John Wick fans will be okay either way. Film fans have mostly been understanding about this whole ordeal. I think, more than anything, we just want to make sure these movies are ultimately good. Three films in, the filmmakers need to ensure the quality is consistent and the legacy intact.
