What Does Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker’s Metacritic Score Reveal?

With Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker’s embargo now lifted, fans all have their eyes on Rotten Tomatoes. Over the course of the past 15 or so years, the review aggregate site has become a huge part of how viewers decide whether or not they see a movie. However, it is worth noting that it only shows one part of the picture: how many reviewers recommend the film. In essence, it boils the nuance of each review into “yes” or “no.” Do they recommend it, or do they?

As such, it’s not quite accurate to say that a film “gets a 90%” on Rotten Tomatoes. It doesn’t mean that we can expect the movie to be guaranteed an A-rating from most viewers. Instead, it means that the movie was, by and large, fairly favorable across the board, and the 90% of critics recommend it — and for all we know, they could all have been lukewarm with a positive slant.

That’s where Metacritic comes in. This one converts reviews into scores from 0 to 100 and averages it all out, giving a better idea of what critics as a whole actually think of a film. By and large, even the films that get 95% on Rotten Tomatoes aren’t viewed nearly as favorably here. So, what does it mean for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is currently hovering around a Rotten 57%? Has to be the worst-rated Star Wars film of all-time, according to critics, yes?

Not quite. But it’s not too far off.

I went back and pulled the numbers from every film in the franchise, and here is what their respective Metacritic scores — keep in mind, that for older films, it’s harder to get an accurate gauge, as online reviews weren’t a thing back in the 1980s, because, you know, technology.

The Phantom Menace: 51
Attack of the Clones: 54
Revenge of the Sith: 68
A New Hope: 90
The Empire Strikes Back: 82
Return of the Jedi: 58
The Force Awakens: 81
Rogue One: 65
The Last Jedi: 85
Solo: 62
The Rise of Skywalker: 54

It’s also worth pointing out that The Rise of Skywalker still has plenty of other critics it needs to add to its average. But, all in all, this latest film may not be the worst-reviewed film of the franchise, but it’s rubbing elbows with two of the worst with The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

How do you feel about this, and considering how well-reviewed The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were, do you care about what critics have to say? Let us know your thoughts down below!
