Jurassic World Rebirth is a story about adventure and survival. Following the events of Jurassic World: Dominion, the majority of the dinosaur population has died off. Their usefulness, however, has only just emerged. A pharmaceutical superpower believes that they are the secret to developing cures for ailments like heart disease. Unfortunately, the only way to research and create these new drugs is with fresh dinosaur biological material. As such, executive Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend) wants to send a team of operatives and scientists to an island populated by some of the rarest known prehistoric creatures. Mercenary Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) leads the expedition alongside naval captain Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali) with paleontologist Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) along for the ride. When the expedition hits unexpected turmoil, the crew suddenly finds themselves in a deadly and perilous situation.
What works in Jurassic World Rebirth are the strong characters thrust into heart pounding action sequences. The team-up of writer David Koepp (Mission: Impossible, Jurassic Park) and director Gareth Edwards (Star Wars: Rogue One) proves to be a perfect fit to kickstart this franchise with its 7th film. Koepp puts extra effort into developing each of the characters, making nearly all of the protagonists relatable, charismatic, and easy to root for. Edwards then drops them into some wonderfully terrifying scenarios. The team proves masterful at engaging audiences at just the right cadence of intensity balanced with fun. The thrills are some of the best in series to date, and clear effort from the cast and crew to entertain the audience pays off at nearly every turn.

People who have grown weary of (or never particularly enjoyed) the Jurassic Park films are unlikely to appreciate Jurassic World Rebirth as much as others. Narratively speaking, the movie is simple. It would be easy to classify it as derivative of classic people vs. monster films that helped define the genre. Furthermore, individuals who are averse to tension may want to seek something else. Jurassic World Rebirth covers the fear spectrum from sudden jump scares to elongated moments of watching characters teeter on the edge of disaster. While it never gets too gory, Jurassic World Rebirth leans into horror more than previous films.
Jurassic World Rebirth feels like a breath of fresh air by going back to basics. While it may not revolutionize the genre, there’s enough creativity with set pieces and locales to keep people immersed in the action. And thanks to some heartfelt performances, it gives us heroes of all shapes and sizes that are easy to cheer on. Highly recommended.
