What to Watch This Weekend – One of Them Days

One of Them Days

One of Them Days is a story of two friends just trying to keep things together. Dreux Jones (Keke Palmer) has aspirations. While currently working as a waitress, she’s secured an interview to potentially move up into management. Dreux’s best friend and roommate Alyssa (SZA) is in a slightly different place. Alyssa has dreams of becoming a professional artist with her paintings, but imposter syndrome holds her back. On top of that, she’s in a relationship with Keshawn (Joshua Neal), a directionless moocher. On the last day of the month, Dreux and Alyssa learn that their landlord never received the rent. Unless the two can come up with the money by the end of day, they’ll face eviction. Desperate to acquire the cash, Dreux and Alyssa go on a mishap-filled adventure across Los Angeles that will put the limits of their friendship to the test.

What works in One of Them Days are the laugh out loud antics, thanks to the amazing chemistry between the two leads. Screenwriter Syreeta Singleton (Black Monday, Central Park) crafts some truly funny dialogue, but also weaves in a ton of heart. When coupled with some truly ridiculous situations, it’s impossible not to have a good time. In addition, Palmer and SZA are clearly all-in on the shenanigans. Watching the two of them navigate the absurdity around them, and each other, feels genuine. As a result, One of Them Days will likely remind people of screwball comedy classics in the best way, while still being its own thing.

People who prefer their comedies a little more grounded may not enjoy One of Them Days as much as others. Most of the characters and scenarios are exaggerated caricatures. For example, one of the more squeamish-inducing scenes involves a blood donation going very wrong. This has exactly the consequences one might imagine. In addition, those adverse to crude language may find One of Them Days off-putting. Finally, One of Them Days is purposefully silly. The suspension of belief may be a bit too much for some people expecting a more realistic take.

One of Them Days is an absolute delight for those looking for an easy laugh. Writing and executing consistent comedy for an entire runtime is a very, very tough skill. But this crew makes it look effortless. The combination of Singleton’s writing with Palmer and SZA’s dedication to the art pays off in a big way. Highly recommended.
