I remember back when I was five years old and 20th Century Fox revealed they were making a horror-centric New Mutants film. We got the trailer on my sixth birthday, and now all these years later, I’m 31 years old and we have no movie to show for our time. Okay, obviously, I’m exaggerating, but that doesn’t change the fact that The New Mutants has been delayed a solid two years from when it was supposed to hit theaters — and this is a delay that AFTER we saw the trailer.
Reshoots were supposed to happen last year, but as far as we know…none of that has happened. So what is the deal with The New Mutants? We know it has a spot on Disney’s slate, but what’s the holdup? Digital Spy recently spoke with producer Simon Kinberg, and here’s what he had to say.
“What’s happening is we’re gonna do reshoots this year on that film and it has a new release date from Disney. That’s really it.
“Part of it was figuring out what the reshoots were gonna be, the pick-ups, and the other part of it was getting that cast back together. For all of these movies, Marvel’s really brilliant at scheduling pick-ups into their budget and schedule so it’s all prepared, and we have never been that smart. For us, we’re always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time.”
In short, Fox just hasn’t had a formula for bringing back actors after principal photography. Part of that may have also come from the reshoots needing to be more extensive than they initially planned, but that’s all speculation on my part. In this day and age, it baffles me that studios don’t already have this kind of thing baked into the schedule.
