Deadline reports that Wheel of Time Season 2 gets a major recast. One of the five main characters, the Emond’s field five has been recast for Season 2. Matt Cauthon, who is most likely the most beloved character by fans of the books, is played by Barney Harris in Season 1, which launches this November. However as reported, Amazon has released Harris from his contract for unspecified reasons. The outlet says they are looking to cast Dónal Finn in his place.
This is strange decision, and the silence behind it even more mystifying. However, these changes do happen from time to time and there could be a variety of reasons why this change was necessary. Of course, no audiences have yet seen Wheel of Time, so we cannot say how good or bad Harris was as Matt. The thing with Matt, is that I think fans might not like him much in the opening season. The character goes through some tough times early on which I won’t get into. However Matt does grow into a lovable rogue, and the Han Solo vibes are strong with him as the story goes on.
Maybe this is a simple as the producers deciding they had made a mistake with Harris? Although, there could be many other possible reasons, the point is we don’t know.

Just going by looks alone, I thought Harris looked the part as Matt, but honestly that means very little. You can see images of both actors in previous roles below in some Twitter posts discussing the news, Barney is first, followed by Finn.

The thing that worries me most is that a change was not made early through Season 1. However that’s only if it was a casting call. If there were other reason for the change, then I guess all bets are off. I want Wheel of Time to be great, because it is a truly great story being told. However, I did feel like that story takes time to get going. Matt is a good example, a character I didn’t think much of who grew into a favorite by the end.
I just hope the change is not too jarring in Season 2. Though, there is a kinda way they could pull a Don Cheadle style deal with it switch within the story of I assume Season 2. Maybe that would be a little too meta to pull off though?
