Which Genres Have Streaming Services Invested Most In Recently?

How are streaming services skewing in terms of genre?

The landscape of entertainment is constantly changing. It’s always been constantly changing. The tides change on a seasonly basis to adapt to trends in demand. While the industry has now shifted to the world of streaming television, the streamers are still keeping their ears to the ground for the most bankable trends.

So, what trends are really popping in the world of streaming? Our friends over at Reelgood have the scoop. They utilized the information based on their millions of users (which includes over 150 services) and calculated the growth in specific genres in all the major streamers. More specifically, they singled out the biggest growth in TV genres as of July 15, 2020 compared to September 15, 2019. For services that didn’t exist by then, they compared from December 15, 2019. And for HBO Max, they compared to previous numbers in HBO Now.

Here’s the list of TV genres that grew!

They also calculated the same thing on the film front.

So, what are the main takeaways here? Well, for starters, HBO Max saw a HUGE uptick in animation from its HBO Now counterpart. 187% increase, to be precise. Additionally, Netflix got 6% more comedy films.

That last part isn’t surprising. Amid COVID, many of us have been hungry for comedy, and Netflix has done a pretty solid job of delivering. It has a fair offering of funny, feel-good stories that have struck chords with audiences.

Personally, I’ll be more interested to see how these stat changes pan out from December of 2019 to December of this year.
