Why Bad Boys For Life And LA’s Finest Didn’t Crossover

Bad Boys For Life enjoyed a phenomenal opening weekend, but fans of the Mike/Syd relationship in the previous film will have to wait for a reunion.

The third outing for the Will Smith-Martin Lawrence franchise raked in $73 million during the holiday weekend, scoring generally positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. However, the third chapter in the action-packed adventures of buddy cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett lacked one specific character from Bad Boys II: Sydney Burnett, played by Gabrielle Union.

Syd, who is the little sister of Marcus, had a romantic relationship with Mike in the second film. While she is mentioned in Bad Boys For Life, there is no sign of her anywhere in the third installment. Meanwhile, Union has reprised her role as Syd on the Spectrum Originals series LA’s Finest, where she has moved to Los Angeles and has teamed up with LAPD Detective Lieutenant Nancy McKenna, played by Jessica Alba. Given the continuation of Syd’s story, many wondered why she was not added to the Bad Boys For Life script.

Katherine Pope, the head of original programming for Spectrum Originals, had the following to say regarding the lack of Syd in the film:

“There were talks, because Jerry Bruckheimer and Doug Belgrad, who produce the movie, also produce LA’s Finest. It honestly was logistics. When we picked up L.A.’s Finest, Bad Boys was already, I think, it was days away from shooting. So it was all so last minute and we tried to make it work and just logistically we couldn’t.”

“There was some talk about it, but the thing is, at the end of the day the story was so tight basically that there was no real room for it [that storyline]. We probably would have ended up having to cut it, and we didn’t want to do that. So, eventually we just decided to focus on the main story.”
However, both sides have not ruled out any future crossover if there were to be a fourth installment in the Bad Boys franchise. Fallah and El Arbi have stated that if the fans want a fourth, they will happily make it happen, leaving the door open to reunite Syd with her brother and former lover. As for Pope, she believes Syd’s return to Miami is bound to happen. “Oh it will happen. We’ll have more time to plan.”
