Why Crisis On Infinite Earths Started With That Shocking Death

The ambitious Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event has officially begun — and it’s started off with quite the bang. We already knew there would be a lot of superheroes making their way into the five-episode special, but we didn’t know just how wide the implications would be in this crossover.

In the opening minutes, we saw the Earths of Tim Burton’s Batman, the 1966 Batman, and the Earth of DC Universe’s Titans. Sadly, they were unceremoniously destroyed, and it really helped set both the tone and the stakes of what’s to come.

But that wasn’t the most surprising part. The episode ended with the death of the Green Arrow. That’s right, poor Oliver Queen couldn’t even hold off on dying in his own episode. Instead, he had to bite the dust in the Supergirl episode, fulfilling a telling prophecy from the Monitor, but doing it much sooner than anticipated.

“The dilemma that we presented to ourselves was that we spoiled our own story,” executive producer Marc Guggenheim said. “So if Oliver dying isn’t the surprise, what is the surprise? The timing of him dying? We’ve kind of figured that the audience is expecting that Oliver will die in the climax in the fifth hour. So if we went in the exact opposite direction, and killed him off at the end of hour one, we accomplished two things — we hopefully do surprise the audience. That’s absolutely the intention. And we also really establish the stakes that going into the next four hours, if Oliver Queen can die, then no one is safe.”

With there being four hours left of story as well as a couple other potential deaths, the stakes are most certainly high, though one thing these other characters have that the Green Arrow no longer had — a television series with a future. Will that take the wind out of the proverbial sails in terms of dramatic tension? Hopefully not, but we’ll see!
