Why Didn’t Nick Fury Page Captain Marvel Before?

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe we have seen our heroes individually and as a team go up against some pretty big threats. Everything from Thor’s brother Loki stealing the Tesseract and trying to take over earth with a Chitauri army to Ultron threatening to destroy Earth. We know that the latest threat, the all mighty Thanos, managed to destroy half the Marvel Universe when he united the Infinity Stones with the gauntlet. Seems like the Earth has gone through it’s fair share of emergencies.

This weekend many people will flock to theaters to enjoy the next installment in the MCU, Captain Marvel, where we get to see how Nick Fury first meets up with Carol Danvers in the mid-1990’s. It is here where Captain Marvel gives Fury the modified pager that he actives at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. With that said many will leave the theaters with the question, why hasn’t Fury ever paged Captain Marvel before?

Well Slashfilm asked this question to the head of Marvel Studio’s Kevin Feige. He gives an interesting response. “Well, I’d say two things. One, she does say it’s gotta be a real emergency, right? Yeah”, said Feige, “the other thing I’d say is how do you know he never hit it? How do we know he never pushed it before? We’ve never seen him push it before. That doesn’t mean he never did.”

Slashflim also goes on to talk about Avengers: Endgame footage that was shown to Disney shareholders where War Machine is also looking for answers about her whereabouts during other times of desperation. Captain Marvel gives a very simple explanation. She says that there are many planets in the galaxy that don’t have a team of Avengers to defend them.

Nick Fury himself, Samuel L. Jackson during an interview with IGN also gave his theory on why Fury has hesitated to use the pager. “We finally have an emergency that I feel warrants her presence. This is unprecedented. How are you gonna fight that? I can’t fight that. If I’m not here, I need to find someone to come here who can handle it. All those people are ineffective. They’re great for normal, everyday world disaster. But intergalactic badass who has all the Infinity Stones needs a bit more.”

I would like to think that Fury has in fact pressed the button before as hinted by Feige, but Captain Marvel was simply busy on a defending a distant planet that she could not just leave. She already knows that Fury is more than capable to handle himself in any situation and would get back to Earth as soon as she could to help out. Who’s to say she wasn’t already handling another emergency in a world that didn’t have anyone as previously stated?

No matter the reason, we know that she will have an important presence in Avengers: Endgame and this film and I can’t wait to see it! What do you think are the reasons that Fury didn’t call Captain Marvel sooner? Or do you think that he had paged her before? Let us know in the comment section below!

Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel is now playing in theaters everywhere. Avengers: Endgame will be taking over theaters starting April 26th, 2019.
