Why Nick Fury Waited Until Avengers: Infinity War To Call Captain Marvel

Avengers: Infinity War was a game-changer. Like the original Avengers film before it, it proved that telling an intriguing story with an ensemble cast was possible, but even beyond that, it raised the stakes. The end of the film saw half the main cast disintegrate before our very eyes, and that even included the likes of Maria Hill and Nick Fury.

But before Nick Fury turned into Dirt Devil food, he ran to his car and activated a pager of sorts, calling up Captain Marvel. This got fans wondering why Nick Fury chose this, of all times, to be the moment he called her. Why not during the alien invasion in The Avengers, or when he almost died in Captain America: The Winter Soldier? Writer of the Captain Marvel Prelude comic, Will Corona Pilgrim, gave an extra bit of insight:

“Carol’s the biggest gun you’ve got and Fury’s never one to waste a silver bullet, so if he’s finally making that call after all this time and after all he’s faced alongside the Avengers, then he’s truly seeing the situation as a last resort.”

Hm…Not sure about you, but this answer leaves me a little bit wanting. Like many fans, I’d hope for some bigger connection — like that Fury was somehow aware that something like this would go down and would know exactly when to call her, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here. As it stands, apparently none of the other situations felt enough like a last resort to him. So it’s all about judgment.
