Whenever there’s a big bombshell such as two of the biggest names in TV leaving one of the biggest franchises of all-time, one question people have to ask is…why? What was it that led to David Benioff and Dan Weiss to step away from creating their very own Star Wars trilogy? In a world where fans seem happy with neither Star Wars nor Game of Thrones, it seemed as though many were looking for someone to blame.
So, what actually happened here? Earlier today, we reported on a rumor that stated the duo have been out since May, but a more recent report from THR paints a different picture. They say that during the summer when Benioff and Weiss were shopping around their wares to streamers, they let the prospective buyers know they planned on juggling these shows with their work on the Star Wars trilogy.

However, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy didn’t really seem convinced that the duo could actually effectively juggle all that TV work and Star Wars, and that this eventual departure had been brewing since that August announcement when the two were revealed to be in business with Netflix.
It especially hurt more that Benioff and Weiss made clear that they couldn’t focus on Star Wars until after Game of Thrones ended, and with that happening in July, you can imagine the frustration on seeing they sign a new deal with someone else literally days after. You almost can’t blame Lucasfilm for feeling like they weren’t exactly a top priority for those two. That being said, according to insiders, Netflix seemed to be understanding that the fruits of the labor of their deal with the Game of Thrones duo wouldn’t be seen for a good decade.
Between that and D&D’s desire not to enter into a toxic fandom, they wanted out of the deal, as difficult as it was to do.
