Will Benioff and Weiss Only Be Writing One Of Their Star Wars Movies Or All Three?

This December sees the end of the Skywalker saga for Star Wars. The nine movie serial will be finished for good (for now), and for the next phase of Star Wars Lucasfilm are looking to Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss for a trilogy that is due for release beginning December 16, 2022, then December 20,2024, and finally December 18, 2026.

However, since this was all announced we now know that Benioff and Weiss have signed a mega-deal worth somewhere between $200-300 Million (depending on what report you read) with Netflix to produce TV shows and movies. So is Netflix happy to sit and wait for Benioff and Weiss to finish with Star Wars? That depends. A new report by THR provides some clues, but I’m afraid no solid answers and their sources are a little in conflict with each other on this one. Here are the relevant quotes from the outlet’s report.

“Sources say the Thrones pair is writing a treatment for a Star Wars trilogy and is committed to penning at least one of the films (the original deal was to write all three). It’s unclear if the duo, who also have another feature for Fox/Disney carved out, will do more than just write for Star Wars.

Still, a person familiar with the Netflix deal says the streamer was briefed on their Star Wars schedule and isn’t worried: “It’s not going to be 10 years [until] Netflix sees their first output,” adding that Benioff and Weiss “have a lot of ambition.””

Now I know they have ambition, in fact I strongly suspect their decision to end Game of Thrones earlier than anyone else wanted, was so they could make a lot more money from Star Wars and their (surely already in negotiations?) Netflix deal. Rumor is that Benioff and Weiss have been courted for a few years now and that’s around the time they pair told HBO they would only make two more seasons of Thrones at a reduced episode count.

Could they even be set to do the same thing to Star Wars, will they simply write the first movie and then head on over to start work for Netflix? Clearly, the outlet’s sources, as I said, are slightly conflicted here, with some saying they will write the first movie and maybe not even produce them, and the others saying that Netflix are happy to wait for 10 years for Benioff and Weiss to be ready.

I guess it may be some time before we get some solid answers about how all this will shake down. If I was in Lucasfilm position and Benioff and Weiss were trying to get out of this with nothing more than an overall trilogy treatment then I do have a suggestion, let them go and get on the phone to AGBO (Russo’s, McFeely & Markus), who all love Star Wars and currently don’t have anything that massive on the horizon (that we know of) as a team.

I’d even take Benioff and Weiss producing with this team doing the screenplay and directing duties, but from what we know of Game of Thrones, Benioff and Weiss would probably be too controlling for the likes of the Russo’s who, let’s face it, eclipse even Benioff and Weiss in terms of recent success.

It’s really all speculation for now, but stay tuned for any more news around Benioff and Weiss and their star Wars movies we can lay our hands on. Let us know what you think of this in the usual spot below.
