Will There be an ‘INDEPENDENCE DAY 3’? Director Roland Emmerich Responds

INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE is honestly the sequel I thought would never happen. Sure, it was brought up every in the trades few years, but so are a lot of sequels that never get made. Now that the movie is a mere ten days from its release, I have to say, I’m really looking forward to seeing it. I, like many film-lovers out there, have a soft spot for these epic, silly, fun popcorn flicks, and more often than not, director Roland Emmerich has hit the spot for me.

Though, of course, sequels are never enough in today’s world of franchises. Studios often have to look ahead several films, and it seemed safe to assume that INDEPENDENCE DAY: RESURGENCE was going to have the same approach.

In a fan Q&A session with Empire, the director was asked point blank if there would be a sequel. Emmerich’s answer was blunt.

“If it’s successful enough, yes, because it’s set up for a sequel. In 20 years? No, I wouldn’t want to make it with a Zimmer frame!”

It’s been pretty much assumed that, at the very least, a third film in the franchise would be in the works, but here’s our first confirmation on the topic. It’s definitely nothing earth-shattering — in fact, this is the standard Hollywood approach with most non-source material-based franchises — but it does put a bit of pressure on the film. The first INDEPENDENCE DAY was very much a standalone flick, and if this comment is any indication, this one will likely stand alone, but also hint at some greater threat in the nearer future than 20 years. I’d hate for that future never to be seen, but I suppose I’ll reserve my judgment for when I actually see the movie.
