William Shatner Reveals Real Reason Why He Did Not Attend Leonard Nimoy’s Funeral

Leonard Nimoy, who was famous more than any of his other roles for playing Spock in Star Trek sadly passed away in 2015 from COPD complications. At the time it was news that William Shatner, Star Trek co-star for many years was not attending his funeral.

At the time the reason for Shatner’s omission was given as the actor attending another engagement for the Red Cross, which was true. However, Shatner has now revealed in his book Live Long and… What I Might Have Learned Along the Way, that the real reason was a tad more complicated.

While Shatner did have to attend the Red Cross event, and his daughters attended Nimoy’s funeral in his stead, the actor reveals that he was told he would not be welcome at the funeral. Here is the quote from Shatner himself.

“It was made clear to me that I was not welcome at his funeral. That was painful. I had an easy excuse. My closest friend was Leonard Nimoy. We were born four days apart and raised in Orthodox Jewish homes. We shared so much throughout our careers. I loved Leonard, and he used to refer to me as his brother. Yet at the end of his life and for reasons I still don’t know, he was not my friend. I would call him and he wouldn’t answer the phone or return any messages. He died and I didn’t feel welcome at his funeral.”

Such a shame that whatever happened between these two couldn’t be resolved even on Nimoy’s deathbed. But life happens and people do have fallings out. The pair had a close working relationship for the majority of their lives and perhaps spending that much time working together can affect people’s friendships.
