In the world of comic books, there are few women whohave the recognizability and impact of Wonder Woman. When anyone thinks of a female superhero, there’s a good chance that Wonder Woman is the first one who comes to mind. At 75 years old, Wonder Woman has stood the test of time and impacted the lives of women around the world.
Taking advantage of this iconic figure, the United Nations has officially designated Wonder Woman as the Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls, helping the cause to achieve gender equality.
Here’s what the official release said:
“Women and girls all over the world are overcoming barriers and beating the odds to reach their goals, while contributing their knowledge, ideas and skills to society. They are role models to those around them, often shattering stereotypes and working with others to achieve a more equitable world. They are the embodiment of why gender equality matters. They should not have to work harder than men and boys to make a contribution or to be recognized for their achievements.
“The women and girls who rise up for a better world, and the men and boys who support and stand with them, are superheroes in their own right.
“Providing equal rights and opportunities will unleash the power and potential of women and girls everywhere. And we have to, because it’s our only pathway to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and leaving no one behind by 2030.â€
