Wonder Woman’s Patty Jenkins Reacts To Black Panther’s Best Picture Nomination

Like it or not, there really is a certain type of movie that the Oscars like to award. It’s kind of the same reason why our own Nick Doll here at LRM uses the award nominations as a guide of what NOT to see. More often than not, the nominations are fairly slow, usually based on true events, and feature depressing endings. Obviously, that’s a gross reduction on my part, but you get the idea.

That being said, more often than not, the Best Picture contenders tend to be predictable in nature. Even when the Academy sought to increase the types of films by expanding the category to 10 potential nominations, it only resulted in a wider list of “samey” type movies. Now, a decade after that change was made, we finally have a superhero movie hit the list with Black Panther.

Speaking with Yahoo!, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins reacted to the news, saying:

“I never understood why any type of movie is more likely than another [to be nominated]. This art form has so many people doing great work in all different genres. I think it’s great that a superhero film was finally nominated, and I’m particularly happy that it was Black Panther.”

All I can say is it’s about damn time. As much as I enjoyed Black Panther, it really was overdue for one of these movies to actually get the Best Picture nom. Call me a mindless fanboy, but if we’re talking about work that really celebrates the peak of the craft, I find it hard to believe that these big-budget movies don’t get more recognition.
