We had our first hint at the Gambit movie and we didn’t even know it.
The X-Men films are full of untapped potential. While those first movies connected fairly well, beyond that, there was the feeling that we were always missing something. In that second stream of films, it felt like there was a whole lot of story that I was missing in between. And I’m not even talking about the fact that too many of these movies take place a decade apart from one another. I’m talking about plot points that just don’t seem to add up in any way.
By the end of its run, many of us accepted the fact that the X-Men Cinematic Universe just didn’t have any real continuity. The filmmakers seemed to only care about making the movies one at a time — continuity be damned. There’s nothing really wrong with that, but when few things seem to match up, it’s hard to take any sort of build-up seriously. Smash-cut to the release of X-Men: Apocalypse. The film featured an interesting post-credits scene that…was never paid off.

X-Men: Apocalypse writer Simon Kinberg recently revealed to IGN why this was the case.
“We had a tease of it at the end of Apocalypse. The Essex Corp is something that you see in a tag at the end of Apocalypse. We had talked about doing something with him, and I won’t get into the specifics of it since it’s no longer a 20th Century Fox property and now it’s part of the MCU. I have no idea what the plan is. But Mister Sinister was going to be part of the Gambit movie starring Channing Tatum.”
The scene in question showed some folks from Essex Corp stealing a vile of Weapon X. This hinted at the next story potentially revolving around Mister Sinister. We now know the setup was meant to lead up to Gambit. That movie spent years and years in development hell, but never really took off. With Disney acquiring Fox, you can be sure that movie is never happening.
Consider this Gambit tease another vestigial remain of a plan that never fully came to fruition.
