X-Men: Dark Phoenix Trailer Hits

Well here we are folks, after some very dodgy leaked footage emerged a few days ago, Fox have now released the official trailer for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Dark Phoenix should serve as the final full X-Men movie for Fox before Disney take over the franchise next year.

Honestly, at this point I still feel good about X-Men coming back to Marvel. The Fox made X-Men movies have been up and down for me, with more down than up. X-Men: Apocalypse was frankly a disaster of a movie to this viewer, and yet it utilised my favourite X-Men villain from the comics. So can Dark Phoenix leave us with a sweet, rather than bitter taste in our mouths regarding the Fox led X-Men franchise? For me I have to say that all signs still point to no on that front.

The trailer first hit on The Late, Late Show with James Corden last night and has since been released worldwide on YouTube. The trailer comes across quite well in all honesty and I do see some genuine range in Sophie Turner as Jean Grey, which was missing from Apocalypse.

The gang are all back from First Class in likely their final outings as Professor X, Magneto, Beast and Mystique respectively, along with the younger cast introduced in Apocalypse. My worry is that the story beats here look to be very similar to that of X-Men: The Last Stand, and since both were written by Simon Kinberg, that’s hardly surprising. I am not expecting anything special from Dark Phoenix and yet they have a great opportunity here, by knowing this is the end.

This is definitely going to be the last time we see these actors playing in this universe and as such I do hope they are using reshoots to push the boat out here and add some finality to this universe. Disney CEO Bob Iger has already told the people at Fox and the rest of the world that X-Men will fall under Kevin Feige’s control once Disney’s acquisition of Fox finalises. So why not go a little extreme with this movie and give us a proper dark send off? Yes I am talking severe character death here, why not at this point?

The one positive I will give, is that this looks to be in a lot better shape even trailer wise than Apocalypse did. So let’s just hope that X-Men goes out with a bang in Dark Phoenix, you can find out for yourselves February 14 when the movie hits theaters.
