According to the latest Barside Buzz, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has been rumored as a possible lead in Damon Lindelof’s Star Wars movie. The information comes from Jeff Sneider on this week’s The Hot Mic. If you remember, Sneider was one of the first to break Lindelof’s movie and he’s been sharing a few details as he gets them. First off we should note that as per Sneider’s last information, the movie will have two leads, one female, one male and both are expected to be POC. Though that is not confirmed.
However, as per the title this week, Sneider hits that he thinks Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is the male lead. Here is a full transcript courtesy of Bespin Bulletin. Or you can watch the show for yourself in the link above.
“We talked about how the leads are black, right? It’s a black man and a black woman. I was told, and I think I’ve said this before, so make sure to note this when you’re doing it, I’ve already said this – the black actor came attached to the movie. Who does Damon Lindelof have a relationship with? You know, who did he just work with on his last thing that got him this job? You wanna say it so I don’t have to?”
“[Yahya Abdul-Mateen II] I mean did he fit the description that I was given about an actor that’s gone back and forth between film and television, and yet has never been a lead of his own film? I guess you could say that. Furiosa, I consider him a lead in that movie, but again the movie is called Furiosa, so he technically fits that description. Are we looking at Yahya in Star Wars? I think it’s a possibility.”

That does not sound definite to me by any stretch. However there’s usually also no smoke without fire when it comes to casting rumors like this. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a rising star. Therefore this could be the perfect time to step into Star Wars before he becomes too recognisable by fans. Of course there are two other massive franchises that the actor is involved with. Trades are certain that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Simon Williams in Marvel’s Wonder Man series. The actor also played villain Black Manta both in Aquaman and yet to be released sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
So far I like what I see when it comes to Yahya Abdul-Mateen II professionally. I’m totally into him starring in a Star Wars movie. However for now, I’d definitely keep a handy dose of sodium available when consuming this one. As anyone who follows this industry knows, until there’s a signed deal, any casting can and will change. Hell, even sometimes after a contract is signed it happens anyway. If Yahya Abdul-Mateen II does sign a deal, my bet is that the trades will get a hold of it and run it. Until then, or an announcement from Disney, this is all we have.
