Zack Snyder Returning To Direct A Zombie Film For Netflix

Zack Snyder has not been in the directors chair since he had to step away during the middle of post-production on 2017’s Justice League due to a family crisis. The film was then taken over by Joss Whedon who did re-shoots and finished the film all together. Since that time Snyder and his wife Deborah Snyder have been away from the spotlight focusing on their family and working with suicide awareness causes and regrouping his company.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder is back in doing what he loves best directing. He has signed on to helm a film titled, Army of the Dead, a zombie horror thriller for Netflix. Snyder will also produce the film with his wife via their newly re-branded production company Stone Quarry along with with Wesley Coller. This film is a project that is being taken over from Warner Bros. by Netflix, where it had been set up since 2007. Reports also state that it will begin shooting this summer with a budget that could reach $90 million.

The film is a story that is from Snyder with a script by Joby Harold. Here is the description for the film via The Hollywood Reporter:
The adventure is set amid a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, during which a man assembles a group of mercenaries to take the ultimate gamble, venturing into the quarantined zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Snyder on a zombie film? Now why does this sound familiar? Well that is because he was the director for 2004’s Dawn of the Dead, which had launched his high profile career. This Netflix deal also reunites his with Scott Stuber who is currently Netflix’s movie head and the executive who first gave Snyder his big screen shot at Universal. Since then he has worked on many comic book adaptations like 300, Watchmen and various DCEU films.

According to Snyder, although he enjoyed those films, he is excited to work on a project that he could call his own. “I love to honor canon and the works of art,” he says of his adaptations, “but this is the opportunity to find a purely joyful way to express myself though a genre. It will be the most kick-ass, self-aware — but not in a wink-to-the-camera way — balls-to-the-wall zombie freakshow that anyone has ever seen. No one’s ever let me completely loose [like this].”

It will be interesting to see this film come together and I look forward to seeing this on Netflix sometime in the future. What you think of this film for Snyder? Let us know in the comment section below!
