Alex Winter Talks About Zappa An Unclassified Artist [Exclusive Interview]

Zappa will always be remembered as one of the first artists to speak up about injustice in the music industry, education system and politics. Alex Winter is the writer, director and co-producer of the new Zappa documentary that is also narrated by the late Zappa himself. 

 

The Synopsis: 

With unfettered access to the Zappa family trust and all archival footage, ZAPPA explores the private life behind the mammoth musical career that never shied away from the political turbulence of its time. Alex Winter’s assembly features appearances by Frank’s widow Gail Zappa and several of Frank’s musical collaborators including Mike Keneally, Ian Underwood, Steve Vai, Pamela Des Barres, Bunk Gardner, David Harrington, Scott Thunes, Ruth Underwood, Ray White and others.

Zappa was not only known for being a self taught composer and performer but was also a filmmaker and designed his own album cover. His music creations had no limits and released 62 albums in his lifetime. In 1979 he released his most successful album, Sheik Yerbouti and first album under Zappa Records. Towards the end of his career he was directing a full orchestra to play his music. Zappa continues to be looked up to by musicians and composers and not long from now Zappa will be talked about at par with Mozart and Beethoven.

I had the opportunity to speak with Alex Winter about the making of Zappa via Zoom. He shared his experience going into his Laurel Canyon home and exploring Zappa’s vault for two years plus working with the late Gail Zappa.
