Zenescope Entertainment has a certain knack for fairytale storytelling, hunting monsters in comic book form.
One of their most popular characters is Gretal as a witch hunter after a past incident. She relentlessly hunts down witches, and Zenescope releases a stand-alone issue titled Gretal Dark Impulses as she continues her witch hunting expedition.
In this issue, the story is by Dave Franchini and David Wohl, with artwork from Allen Otero and colors by Maxflan Araujo.
Here is the description of the issue:
Investigating a cunning and powerful witch known as Desire, Gretal and Calibar are violently separated from each other while trying to reach her lair. Now Gretal must risk her life to rescue Caliabar from the witch’s clutches, but does she even want to be freed?

With a limited back story to Gretal, fans of the character witness a simple story as she looks for her partner Calibar in a rural mansion. During her discovery, a witch named Desire (oddly looks more like a demon than a witch) has powers that make suggestions to Calabar on the true nature of what Gretal is becoming. Gretal also discovers the whereabouts of certain missing children.
The artwork and coloring in this issue are on point. The story is pretty standard nowadays, and I was hoping for more of a twist. But, it does advance the story to the next chapter of Gretal and Calibar in their next relationship. It doesn’t go into much backstory about the witch named Desire.
