The Joker’s laugh may be the biggest aspect for an actor to nail down. While every Joker has a laugh, each person who has played the role whether it be live-action or animated have tried to make their laughs unique to their version of the character. Todd Phillips upcoming Joker see Joaquin Phoenix bring his brand of acting to the Clown Prince of Crime.
Phoenix recently spoke with CBR and talked about for his laugh, he looked to real life for inspiration, watching videos of actual patients struggling with involuntary laughing syndrome. You can check out what he had to say below.
“I watched videos of people suffering from pathological laughter, a neurological disorder that makes individuals laugh uncontrollably.”

It couldn’t have been easy to watch those sorts of videos, but Phoenix is known for his dedication into the roles he takes on, even losing himself in them at times. Taking inspiration from a real world condition such as pathological laughter may be the best say to really bring the character to places we haven’t see. After the last iteration of the character, I think most of are ready for a new version of the character and am confident Phoenix will give us something to remember.
