[UPDATED] Fast & Furious Spinoff: Studio Pursuing Dwayne Johnson & Jason Statham Vehicle!

UPDATE: Variety has reported that Charlize Theron’s Cipher, villain from the recent Fate of the Furious, may potentially be a part of this spinoff as well. The plot thickens…

ORIGINAL STORY:

Not everybody was as nuts about the recently-released Fate of the Furious film as I was. However, no mater where you fall on the spectrum in terms of that action-packed piece of escapism, most seem to agree on one thing: Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham have amazing chemistry together.

It makes sense, as the plot seemed perfectly contrived to bring out that antagonistic relationship between these two. On one hand, you have a full-on criminal, and on the other, a lifelong law enforcement loyalist. When forced to team up, there’s bound to be some conflict. Once critics first got to see that film, there was buzz of a potential spinoff that would see those two team up again.

It turns out those rumors were not exaggerated, and now Deadline is reporting that Universal is hard at work on making that spinoff a reality. Of course, rumors surrounding spinoffs for the Fast & Furious franchise aren’t new. For years, there’s been speculation surrounding the character of Hobbs getting his own film, but this is the first time some actual steps are being made to make one happen.

According to the outlet, they’re still in the project, and have just met regarding this concept. Franchise fans will also be happy to hear that longtime franchise screenwriter Chris Morgan is on board to pen the script, so we can likely expect the tone and style to be consistent with that of the other films.

More surprisingly, however, is that this film may hit production while the studio is figuring out where to take the next proper Fast & Furious film. Our big question is whether or not this means Deckard and Hobbs will be out of Fast & Furious 9 — though given the draw of Johnson and Statham, we highly doubt the studio would dare risk having a Fast film without these two.
