Get ready to pour out some of your favorite hard beverage for Joe Johnston, because it sounds like the longtime director is close to hanging up his directing hat in the very near future.

Speaking with ARTS, Johnston expressed his plan to retire from directing after finishing up his next film, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair. Here’s what he had to say:

“That’s the plan. It will take a couple of years to make the film, but we won’t even be able to start shooting until next winter. I think I’m just ready to go do something else now. I have a lot of dogs, and they demand long walks every day in the country [Laughs]”

But how serious is he about this? Earlier on in the interview, he was asked whether or not he’d be up to direct a Star Wars film, and his response was:

“It would depend on the story. It’s always about the story.”

So as it stands, it definitely seems like his plan is to call it quits soon, but that’s not to say that the right story can’t come along and convince him to have another go.

That’s disappointing. Nobody does nostalgic period films like him — I love The Rocketeer and The First Avenger is still my favorite Cap film. Hell, I even liked Jurassic Park 3 better than the first two. I guess he’s just not trendy enough for the studios these days.

Rocketeer was good, but I like the second Cap movie much, MUCH better. The 3rd Cap movie was no Cap movie but Avenger 2.5 but even then it was better than the Johnston’s attempt.

Rocketeer, Jumanji, Honey I Shrunk The Kids – those are Johnston’s movies that I really like. All the others somehow were more or less alright but nothing to write home about in my opinion.

Winter Soldier had the advantage of NOT being saddled with an origin story, or making WWII interesting to a present day audience. I think Johnston had the tougher row to hoe, and he did a great job; I’ll take First Avenger any day of the week.

First Avenger was good but they only got better.

blah, gonna loose an amazing talent.

It’s been a tough week, this is the least of it. Oh and don’t ever talk with Joe about The Rocketeer

      Why not?

Joe Johnston for the Boba Fett standalone film. He will make him use his rocket pack.
