Roland Emmerich Wants To Do Independence Day 3 — But Would Disney Go For It?

First of all, I have to say upfront that I have nothing but love for Roland Emmerich. This is a man who shaped many a childhood with movies like Universal Soldier, Stargate, Godzilla (yes, the terrible one), and of course, Independence Day. He’s also gone on to direct plenty of fun, trashy movies like The Day After Tomorrow and White House Down. I wouldn’t call any of his movies great, but if I’ve had a hard week, I could do worse than pop up one of his movies and escape into another, usually dangerous, world.

But let’s talk about Independence Day. This was a movie that fit in nicely alongside other ‘90s disaster, world-ending, and alien invasion movies of the era. Heck, one could say it was one of the movies that helped exemplify the ‘90s blockbuster as a whole. It had plenty of plot threads, plenty of celebrities, and a fun tone. You wouldn’t be blamed for spending two decades wanting a sequel.

In fact, that’s what fans did until, twenty years later in 2016, that’s exactly what we got. Independence Day: Resurgence hit theaters and unfortunately landed with a thud. Missing Will Smith’s aside, the movie committed the ultimate sin: it was boring. I’m sorry to say it, but it just wasn’t a fun movie to watch. Bad movies I could handle, but boring ones are a different story.

The movie was also a financial failure, pretty much putting a sequel off the table. However, prior to Independence Day: Resurgence’s release, Emmerich had expressed his desire to create a sequel — a sequel that would be an intergalactic journey.

“The next one will be an intergalactic journey,” Emmerich told Empire. “It’ll be [set] maybe a year or two later, not 20 years [on]. I want to maintain this group of people, especially the young characters, and Jeff [Goldblum] and Brent [Spiner] will take part in it. It’ll be fun to keep that group together. I imagine them now going in one of these ships they’ve rebuilt into a wormhole. I think it’ll be the classic of going into space but it has to be about Earth, and we have a really good idea for that.”

It was an ambitious idea, but one that would never come to fruition. And then, as recently as this past November, Emmerich expressed his regret over continuing with the movie following Will Smith’s departure.

“I just wanted to make a movie exactly like the first, but then in the middle of production Will opted out because he wanted to do Suicide Squad,” Emmerich told Yahoo Movies UK. “I should have stopped making the movie because we had a much better script. After I had to, really fast, cobble another script together. And I should have just said ‘no,’ because all of a sudden I was making something I criticized myself, a sequel.”

But does any of this mean that Emmerich still doesn’t want to produce this other sequel idea?

“I had naturally talked with Fox about it, and then when they got bought,” Emmerich told Cinema Blend. “I kind of said, ‘Well, that’s probably [over.]’ But I don’t know. We’ll see, it’s kind of like it could happen, it could not happen. Hollywood is like a strange, strange place these days, because I have a feeling Disney would maybe be interested in doing it. They like that kind of franchise movie. I have an idea for Independence Day 3, which I actually researched, and was actually only done to do the next one. And the next one is a kind of cool idea, and I would like to do that.”

He’s not wrong about that. Disney has always been a blockbuster-hungry mammoth, and they’ve only gotten worse over the past decade. Despite the past one’s failures, they could, in fact, resurrect it for a third time. But would it be any good? That is the big question. I know for a fact that no one else is interested in being tortured like the previous one.

Then again, that’s just my opinion on the film. What did you think of Independence Day: Resurgence and would you like to see Emmerich return for a third movie? Let us know your thoughts down below!
