EXCLUSIVE: Independence Day: Resurgence Producer Has No Plans To Do Another Film Anytime Soon

EXCLUSIVE: For many of us currently in this field, Independence day was a pivotal film. It was a jaw-dropping action-blockbuster in the midst of the action blockbuster’s rise to prominence in the mid-1990s. It solidified Will Smith as a film star and featured countless other topnotch actors, who all helped to see this larger-than-life story.

However, even movies made with the best intentions don’t always flourish. Such is the case with its sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, which was 20 years in the making. Sure, it made around $390M worldwide, but based on its budget of $165M, it wasn’t making the numbers it needed to truly succeed. But is a sequel still possible? Perhaps, but for now, it doesn’t sound like franchise producer/writer Dean Devlin has any plans to revisit this world.

Speaking with LRM at WonderCon while promoting his latest horror-thriller Bad Samaritan, when we asked if he had any plans for another film, he said:

“I don’t know. I don’t know. Currently, I personally have no plans on doing another one.”

As we mentioned, you can never say never in Hollywood, but as of right now, there doesn’t seem to be much overall interest. In addition to being a box office disappointment, Independence Day: Resurgence was panned heavily by critics and this likely influenced audiences’ lukewarm reception to the flick.

Are you sad that it doesn’t look like we’ll be getting another film anytime soon? Let us know if you want another Independence Day film down below! And be sure to keep an eye out for our full interview with Devlin later this week!
