Star Wars: Lucasfilm Will Decide On The Next Anthology Film In June

Nowadays, us fans crave even the most minute bits of information for our upcoming films. We want to know the official title of upcoming films, as well as the smallest plot points, costume, or vehicle details that — while ultimately mean nothing — can help scratch that fandom itch that is oh-so-persistent. This is especially the case for all things Star Wars. With each passing year, the fandom for that particular franchise only grows, and we grow hungrier for any information on the upcoming films.

Up until now, Disney and Lucasfilm have done a good job at not casting the light too far into the future. For the longest time, the only real films we knew about were Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and as of right now, the only films we know about are Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Han Solo — a movie which still doesn’t have a damn title. But as the release of The Last Jedi draws nearer, we can’t help but wonder what to expect AFTER Episode IX. What will be the anthology film that will follow the closing of this new trilogy?

For some time, it was assumed it would be a Boba Fett spinoff, and in more recent reports, it’s been confirmed that this was indeed what Josh Trank was planning on doing before the whole Fantastic Four fiasco. So what will they be working on?

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy was asked if there would be another anthology film beyond Han Solo.

“Yes. We haven’t identified it yet, but yes. We have a couple of things right now that we’re circling, and we’ll make a decision between the two pretty shortly. It’s probably for 2020, and we will make a decision by June.”

Of course, just because they make a decision in June doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll know in June. With the exception of the whole Josh Trank deal, Lucasfilm has been great about keeping things under wraps until it’s the best time for them to reveal. I can imagine they’ll want to make sure all their ducks are in a row before they announce. Even if they make a decision in June, they’ll want everything to be in order so that they’re not put in a position where things go bad, and they have to pull the film from their slate.

What could the next anthology film be? Rumors have always been abound about an Obi-Wan and bounty hunter film, but you never know with this world. Star Wars is such an expansive universe that they can do whatever they want. They can play things close to the film canon with films like Rogue One, or they may even see this as an opportunity to expand in unexpected directions.
