Why We Haven’t Seen Aquaman Trailer Yet, According To Director

We sure are spoiled. Here we are, nine months from the release of DC’s next big film, Aquaman, and we’re already hungry for a first trailer. Given the simple fact that we’re well over half a year away from the movie’s eventual release date, you think that’d be enough of an excuse for fans. Apparently not.

In an era where we get new blockbusters dropping every five seconds, we also demand a lengthy and effective marketing campaign to help us get properly hyped for the movie. But the reality is that most movies don’t market outside of six months from its release — and under VERY rare exceptions, it may be done within a year (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I’m looking at you). It’s because of this that it came as no surprise when Aquaman director James Wan took to Twitter to give a simple behind why we have seen no trailer yet.

“Hey friends, I usually do my best to avoid internet noises (especially fabricated distractions) but a teaser-trailer going out this weekend was never in the books — despite what some claim. It’s not because of anyone or any nefarious reason holding it back — IT’S ME. I am simply not ready yet to share. This movie is filled to the gills with VFX, and the process is as slow and laborious as a sea-slug! Yes, even shots for the trailers take forever to do, and I refuse to put out anything that might be construed as subpar. I know it seems like nothing much is brewing above the surface, but I can assure you, we’re working nonstop under the waves 🌊 😉 (Ps: And yes, I plan to use oceanic puns/references every chance I get 😂)”

So there we have it. While Justice League may not have performed as well, and some fans love to hammer down on the negative narrative behind the DC Extended Universe, the simple truth is that there is little evidence that suggests this movie is in trouble. But will it be good enough to turn things around for the DCEU? That is the ultimate question.

Aquaman hits theaters on December 21, 2018.
