Star Wars: The Last Jedi didn’t pull any punches. While The Force Awakens set up some things that audiences thought would last the entirety of the trilogy, The Last Jedi was perfectly content to answer as many questions — and close as many open doors — as possible over the course of its runtime.

The result? A sizable body count that includes both Supreme Leader Snoke and Luke Skywalker. Many fans lamented the use of Luke in the film, his grumpiness, his aversion to the Force, and his untimely death. Many even lamented that George Lucas had not been at the head of this new trilogy. But what plans did Lucas have for Luke?

Actor Mark Hamill spoke with IGN regarding this very subject, and he revealed Luke’s original fate.

“I happen to know that George didn’t kill Luke until the end of [Episode] 9, after he trained Leia. Which is another thread that was never played upon [in The Last Jedi].”

So in both versions of the story, Luke reaches an untimely end. Of course, the big difference here seems to be that he willingly trains others in the Force — and he trains Leia, of all people! It’s this approach to the story that I think a lot of hardcore fans were expecting and based on that quote alone, it sounds like the old guard was going to play a much more crucial role than they do now.
