Today in the States, Americans are celebrating their independence from their colonial father, Great Britain. 242 years ago, the States became their own entity, paving the way to unprecedented freedom the likes of which the world has never seen before and since (or so they tell us). However, as shows like House of Cards teach us, the struggle for power up top is still incredibly messy.
When last we left House of Cards, Claire Underwood had ascended to the role of President of the United States, leaving her husband Frank Underwood out to dry in his own scandals — which is, frankly, quite fitting, given what ultimately happened to actor Kevin Spacey. In a new teaser from the show, Claire wishes us a happy Independence Day…to her.

This video works on two levels. The first is her officially declaring herself free from under the oppressive thumb of frank, and the second is the consistent trend of the Underwoods making everything about them. In a country where republic democracy reigns, they manage to make it feel more like a dictatorship.
How will the tale of the Underwoods resolve? We’ll have to wait for the final season of House of Cards to hit to find out.
