Every era comes to an end at some point, and it looks like the reign of Kevin McCallister is coming to a close. And the little kid had a good run. His booby-trap-making escapades did well for him in Home Alone. It saved him from the Wet Bandits and became the perfect Christmas movies for families around the world to enjoy. But as stated above, there is a new king in town in terms of box office grosses.

Variety is reporting that Illumination Entertainment’s The Grinch has just passed the $500 million mark. Of course, this pretty much solidifies this movie as a huge success for the studio that has basically been printing money since its inception, but in passing that, and $476 million, it has taken the prize as the highest-grossing holiday film of fall time.

As indicated above, Home Alone was the previous record-holder. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. There’s no way it would compare if we adjusted for inflation. And you know what? You’re absolutely right. And if we’re also accounting for premium ticket sales, it really goes to show just how many more people used to actually go to theaters than today.

But, of course, that’s beside the point. In terms of flat numbers, the $75 million-budgeted Grinch film is a runaway success. And while it may not be making Minions money, it’s still doing incredibly well for the Illumination brand.
