One of the perceived criticism of Star Wars: The Last Jedi from many fans was how the story felt a little like it wasn’t following on from the story began in The Force Awakens. It remains to be seen how well that movie will link in with the third installment of the sequel trilogy when The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters in December.
Once again though, Rian Johnson has said he was in constant contact with both Lucasfilm and J.J. Abrams when he was writing The Last Jedi. Johnson was in attendance at the BFI London and one of the audience members has detailed what Johnson spoke about with regards to Star Wars, check out the Twitter post from Kira Lin below.
No details of the new SW films but he is in discussion with Lucasfilm. He is a SW fan from boyhood. Luke was his hero. he said 'that little boy with the broom at the end was me'

As you can see, Johnson talks about how he wanted to craft something that worked on its own merits but still felt like a part of the trilogy. Of course, as I type this, I am fully aware that most of the comments that will appear below will be in firm disagreement with Johnson about this aspect of his movie.
I personally wasn’t a fan of The Last Jedi, I think anyone who reads this site knows my thoughts on it by now. The problem I have found is that those who didn’t like it, have a variety of different reasons why they didn’t like it. For some it’s the way Luke Skywalker was handled, for some it’s the way Johnson got rid of Snoke from the equation, for some it was the way the plot drifted away when Rose and Finn went to Canto Bight. Yet, there are also those out there who really enjoyed the movie and defend it passionately.
The question may be, where the balance falls on those who liked and didn’t like it, and that’s really hard to gauge. I personally find it hard to accept that the rumored events of The Rise of Skywalker were designed to follow on from The Last Jedi, in what trilogy would the overarching villain be killed in the second movie and then replaced with an older villain in the finale? I just don’t buy it.

What is interesting is the way Johnson’s language has changed recently with the way he discusses his upcoming Star Wars trilogy. From talking like it was a certainty and that he just hadn’t fully developed it yet, it now appears like he is saying that he is in discussions with Lucasfilm whenever this is mentioned. I am genuinely starting to think this might never happen, but I could be adding up numbers and coming up with pictures at this point in time. Maybe he just doesn’t want to share anything too specific yet after all, or, Lucasfilm has some cold feet?
I don’t even need to ask, I’ll see you all in the same place as usual to discuss the same movie we’ve been discussing for the last two years.
