It’s a question fans have had ever since Star Wars: The Force Awakens re-introduced Luke’s lightsaber. But…how did it get there? That was never answered in the movie, nor in the films that followed, so many fans were just expected to assume at some point, someone had gone back to retrieve it. 

Well, in Marvel’s Star Wars #2, they reveal…that’s kinda what happened. The comic picks up after The Empire Strikes Back, and Luke is all depressed about losing his hand and whatnot (and I’m sure hearing that his daddy was the Dark Lord of the galaxy probably didn’t help). But Lando thinks that retrieving the lightsaber is a great idea.

According to the Cloud City Baron Administrator, lightsabers are rare, and losing that in addition to Luke’s hand is probably not great for his mental state. He goes on to say that he knows the city and knows exactly where the saber would have fallen.

Unfortunately, someone else grabbed it before he could, but then he held it out to Luke, telling him to follow his destiny. Okay, then.
