Star Wars: Test Footage Surfaces For Old In-Development Series From George Lucas

You remember Star Wars: Underworld? I know, it’s been a long time since I even heard that title. It was the placeholder name for a live-action Star Wars TV series that George Lucas was developing. The goal was to have a show set between Episode III and Episode IV, and apparently over fifty scripts were actually written for the show that was eventually canceled due to budgetary reasons.

In fact, back in 2011, Lucas himself was asked about the reason behind the cancellation, and he was very upfront about the reasons when speaking with Attack of the Show at the time (yeah, that’s right. Attack of the Show).

“It sits on the shelf. We have 50 hours. We are trying to figure out a different way of making movies. We are looking for a different technology that we can use, that will make it economically feasible to shoot the show. Right now, it looks like the Star Wars features. But we have to figure out how to make it at about a tenth of the cost of the features, because its television. We are working toward that, and we continue to work towards that. We will get there at some point. It’s just a very difficult process. Obviously, when we do figure this problem out, it will dramatically effect features, because feature films are costing between $250 to $350 million. When we figure this out, they will be able to make a feature film for $50 million.”

But, unfortunately, we never got the slightest taste of what the show actually was. Now, some supposed “test footage” from the show has surfaced. I’ll be the first admit that I have no idea if this is real, but if it’s not, a hell of a lot of resources went into getting the extras alone. Then again, the behind-the-scenes part in the second half does make it seem more plausibly legit. Anyway, take a look!

I’ll admit…it’s not great. Rather than being a natural segue into the feel of the original trilogy, it feels more like a natural extension of the style of the Prequel Trilogy, which I don’t like. It also seems more interested in setting and style over actual characters and plot — though given that it’s test footage, that was likely intentional.

What is most interesting is how a TV show of this caliber would easily be possible nowadays. Technology has come a long way, and shows like The Mandalorian and its use of Stagecraft has made the seemingly impossible possible.
