It has been almost twenty years since we got to experience Vince McMahon’s creation of The XFL. Although it was only for one season it had a lasting impact on what not to do in a football league. Vince McMahon tried to bring the formula he used on the WWF which saw an all time high in television ratings. Instead of focusing on the actual game he brought gimmicks and characters. Like wrestling he wanted the game to be the backdrop for a storyline of scandal and controversy. In the end it was a mess of a product that no one was interested in watching.
Fast forward to this past weekend and the only thing that the new XFL that resembles the past is the name. Like many around I was skeptical if Vince McMahon could create a product that would be good enough to resemble actual football. In one weekend of games the product that has been put on the field is far better that what we all experienced in 2001. While the quality of the game is not near the execution as the NFL, I enjoyed watching all of the games this weekend.

The player execution struggled mainly because a lack of preseason games. I expect for the execution to get better as the season goes along, but this would be a great example of why the NFL needs the preseason for its team. Where this weekends game struggled with was in officiating. While the core of the game remains the same as traditional football, the officials and players struggled with the new rules. While most of the focus has been on the players what I think the coaches have made the new XFL work. Bringing in offensive minded coaches like Bob Stoops, June Jones, and Pep Hamilton has helped the offensive production on the field which was a flaw in the old XFL. These offenses will only get better as the season progresses.
From the updated rules, on field interviews, mic’d up coaches, and different camera angles the games are entertaining to watch at home. At the game fans have been on social media sharing their experience as well. The most talked about aspect has been ticket prices with them being a fraction of the cost of NFL tickets. Overall most post have been positive experiences at the game.
Overall while the XFL is not as strong as the NFL, it is leaps and bounds better than the old XFL. For those of you that watched what did you all think? Let us know in the comment section below.
