The end is nigh. Before it arrives hunker down and get ready for Atomic Apocalypse. Actress Krista DeMille stars in Martin Gooch’s new film. Check out the synopsis – Sheltered mother Kate (Krista DeMille, Best Actress IIFA, SIFF, BSFFF) loses her injured survivalist husband Sam (Ron Roggé, 13 Reasons Why, Stranger Things) and love-struck daughter Suzi (Andrea Sweeney Blanco) in a matter of days after they join handsome loner Joe (Jesus Lloveras) in search of a rumored hidden nuclear bunker full of food and medicine. Suddenly alone and lost, Kate fights to stay alive and reunite with her family. Nature will survive. Would we?

Recently Krista DeMille talked to LRM about her latest film. Read on for the interview.

Krista: Good morning, hello.

LRM: Hey. How are you today?

Krista: I’m really good.

LRM: Let me ask you, what’s your role in the film Atomic Apocalypse?

Krista: Well I play Kate, I play the mother of a mostly grown daughter, and me alongside her and Sam, we’re ousted from our safe hiding place where we’ve been hunkering down and staying out of the fray after the apocalypse has gone down, but we get raided by raider people looking to steal. The movie is really about me and my family trying to survive.

LRM: It looks like a fun film. I imagine there are some tales from the production in Montana with the making of the film. Were there any memorable moments that stand out to you?

Krista: Oh my gosh, yes. We have such an amazing crew and cast. We had so much fun filming this movie. We’ve shot in Northern California and Montana. We did the whole thing in 25 days, and there are over 25 spectacular locations in the film. So we were really moving the company around a lot. Challenges included getting everybody to each location, sometimes having to travel two or three hours in the morning, and also the company moved from California to Montana right in the middle of it. But it was so fun. We just laughed and laughed. Martin Gooch the director, he’s really experienced, he’s a wonderful director, he’s everyone’s favorite director. He gets stuff done, he’s so efficient. And he’s just laughing the whole time. The amount of laughter when we look at the outtakes, it ends with everyone having such a good time. That’s my most distinct memory of the shoot.

LRM: Yeah, it sounds like it’s definitely a great time in hindsight.

Krista: Exactly. Right, the stress of making a movie, you’re going to work your butt off, but it was so fun.

LRM: What was it like working on a horror film? Are there zombies?

Krista: Actually, okay. There are no zombies in this. It is intimated that humans are sort of beginning to mutate, so about two years after an all out nuclear apocalypse, and basically nature is striving to recover, it’s mutating. But that’s a very subtle layer. It hasn’t gone zombie at all. The mutations include creatures are growing an extra eyeball, or some character’s sense of smell is so heightened that they begin to be something other than human. It’s a very subtle layer, but it’s not a zombie apocalypse. It’s really a story of this family surviving through the wilderness, and the question is are humans going to come together and just survive or are they going to kill each other off? So the one thing is nature will likely survive with or without us.

LRM: Very moralistic.  

Krista: Yes. It’s less than two years after the explosions have happened. So I think they’re slowly creeping towards some new state, a new world. There’s a lot of isolation and tribalism. Society has devolved.  No electricity, no gasoline, no communication, just isolation.

LRM: What were the special effects like on the film?

Krista: We had a few great makeup artists, who their primary job was getting us look dirty everyday, but then when we had scenes where there were fights. Oh yeah, they had to create bullet wounds, gashes, all sorts of fun bloody stuff. Those were always favorite days on set for them and for us.

LRM: I can imagine. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Krista: Yeah, it’s fun to watch them work.

LRM: I bet there’s a lot of cleanup there. How’d you get involved in the project, Atomic Apocalypse?

Krista: I’ve been friends with the director Martin Gooch since we met at Sundance in 2012. We were just watching a movie, we were standing in line, one after the other in line, and we didn’t get into the movie, so we just started chatting, we were in line for a long time, and we went to lunch and we started brainstorming about a movie idea I had that I wanted to shoot, and he had just completed his first feature film and we just hit it off and became friends. He’s from London, so whenever he would come to the states he would swing by the New York area, and one of my side passions is river guiding, white water. So he would always come up on the river with me. We’d just keep brainstorming and forwarding our filming plans, and we’ve had a few projects go into pre-production but this is the first one we’ve seen through fully to the end. So we’re really excited to have completed it.

LRM: Awesome. Congratulations on that.

Krista: Thank you.

LRM: That sounds exciting, yeah definitely. And you mentioned you do river guiding? That sounds exciting as well.

Krista: I do. I have a passion for water. River guiding and also sailing. That’s what keeps me sane living in a city. Especially the sailing. The river guiding was a little far away. Now I teach sailing in the New York harbor for fun.

LRM: That’s excellent. That sounds like a definite way to escape that stress of city living.

Krista: Exactly. Balance it out.

LRM: Yeah, definitely. Let me ask you when and where can we tell the readers at LRM to go check out Atomic Apocalypse?

Krista: Well if you have readers here in Montana tomorrow we’ve got two screenings. We do have a screening in LA next Thursday at 7:00 p.m which is in Santa Monica. That’s going to be really fun. A lot of our cast will be there, because a lot of them are LA based, and Martin and I will be there. Other than that you can start renting it. I know it’s on iTunes, Xbox One. It’s coming to Amazon Prime DVD February 28th. Where else? If you Google Atomic Apocalypse in your favorite platform it’s already there. And then streaming will happen on some streaming services, but we’re not sure which yet. That’ll be in a few months.

LRM: Awesome, great. We’ll pass that information along there.

Krista: Thank you very much. Appreciate it.

LRM: You’re welcome. Let me ask you, what’s next for you. Is there anything else we should tell the readers or have fans look out for?

Krista: Yeah, absolutely. Martin and I have a few projects in the channel that we’re close to getting the finances squared for. One is called Alice on Mars, and that is Alice, she went to Wonderland, she went through the looking glass, and now she’s going to Mars.

LRM: Interesting. Can you tell us about this?

Krista: What?

LRM: Are you able to talk about the synopsis there? I mean that’s heavy…. Alice on Mars.

Krista: Yeah, so all your favorite characters, and a number of new ones as well. It’s based on the best-selling book by Robert Rankine, who is an English author. It’s really funny. Martin has done a phenomenal job adapting the book to a really fun screenplay. So we’re just going to have a blast doing that. And basically Alice is abducted to Mars by nefarious characters to help them take over Earth. So she’s going to stop it.

LRM: Awesome. That’s really interesting. People definitely love alternative takes on character’s histories, especially classic characters.

Krista: Yeah, it’s got a steampunk London meets Mars. There’ll be some fun landscapes in that one.

LRM: And when is that going to be available to screen or watch?

Krista: Well we’re in early days. It’s going to be at least two years, yeah, at least two years.

LRM: All right. Definitely looking forward to checking it out.

Krista: Awesome. Thanks

LRM: Yeah any time. Let me ask you one final question. Are you a fan of superheroes?

Krista: Oh yeah, I am. Certainly.

LRM: Do you have a favorite superhero?

Krista: Oh gosh. Favorite superhero. Lately Deadpool.

LRM: Oh yeah, nice he’s a great one.

Krista: Ryan Renolds just makes me laugh so hard.

LRM: I agree. He’s great as Deadpool.

Krista: And also I’m a longtime fan of Wonder Woman, so I was so happy when they brought her up, and Gal brought it to life so beautifully. And I’m looking forward to the next one.

LRM: Me too.
