The New Mutants is actually one of the more interesting films coming out. It’s a lower-budget superhero horror film that was delayed for two years for reshoots. Unfortunately (or fortunately) those reshoots never actually happened, and now the studio that made it has been absorbed by Disney. They have since made the decision to release it in its original form that director Josh Boone originally intended. Furthermore, this is a movie that’s part of the old vision of a studio before it was acquired.
So, yeah, that’s a lot of stuff for one small movie. Be it for its horror elements, its low budget, or its risk-taking nature in the genre, or the fact that it’s from the old guard of Fox, this is a film that will be interesting one way or another.
But just because I’m interested in a movie doesn’t mean the rest of the world is. So, at the end of the day, will it actually make much money? Will it justify all the time it spent being delayed? Probably not, but early projections for the April 3 release have hit. According to Box Office Pro, The New Mutants is set to have between a $15 million and $25 million opening weekend.

In the grand scheme of things, this isn’t a great opening. Now, while this isn’t directly connected to Fox’s previous X-Men movies, it would easily be the lowest-grossing to date. It would only fall behind Dark Phoenix’s $32.8 million. That being said, there is a huge difference between The New Mutants and Dark Phoenix. Dark Phoenix had a $200 million budget and The New Mutants’, while not officially revealed, is likely to have a budget more on par with a horror film than a superhero one.
So, with that in mind, it’ll have to recoup a lot less at the box office in order to be successful. As I’ve said numerous times, I’m anxious to see where things fall with it. But what about you? Do you think it’ll exceed the $25 million expectations? Let us know your thoughts down below!
