RUMOR: Loki Series To Show DC How To Use Their Characters With Squadron Supreme

A long time ago, the 60s, Marvel Comics decided to take a shot at DC and created characters analogous to DC’s big-name heroes. Marvel’s Hyperion, Power Princess, and Nighthawk were like DC’s Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman respectively. Those heroes teamed up to be Squadron Supreme… yup, just like the Justice League. The team has gone through costume changes and periods of hiatus, but every now and then they pop up and have even been bad guys before. Now, I know many people probably read my headline and went straight to the comments, but if you’ll continue reading I promise you’ll feel rewarded… okay, maybe not rewarded, but there’s a reason why I titled this the way I did.

The Rumor and Squadron History

The rumor surrounding the Squadron and Loki comes from Bleeding Cool. They allege that production team members have been given material involving the team, and that means they’ll likely make an appearance on the Disney+ series. One of the chief complaints from Marvel fans about DC heroes is how inhuman they are. They were created in a time of great despair in the United States and were basically demi-gods that embodied human perfection. It wasn’t until much late, the 80s by my estimation, that flaws and humanity began to find itself in the characters but that was often during side stories or non-canon runs. Marvel has always been the exact opposite of DC making sure all of their characters are human first and powered second.

DC’s Past Films

There’s no doubt WB and DC have struggled with their DCEU. However, the most successful films are ones where the hero is given humanity. Think of The Dark Knight trilogy compared to Man of Steel or 1989 Batman to Shazam! and you’ll see the more we, the audience, can connect with the human side of the hero the better received the film is. That’s not to say 70s  Superman or 89 Batman aren’t enjoyed but there’s a reason the MCU does so much better than most DC movies.

What the Squadron Could Bring To Loki

So that brings us to Loki and what the Squadron Supreme could bring to the series. There’s a chance they’ll get good character development and show us what a humanized Superman or Batman can be like. However, I have a feeling they’ll be more like the “heroes” in the Amazon series The Boys. It would be easy to use these characters as foils for Loki without developing them too much, but imagine if they got the true MCU treatment. Imagine a Superman you could relate to due to his loneliness. What about a Batman who is more than “boo hoo, my parents died and I want vengeance” and is more than his money? Loki could deliver the best DC heroes on screen to date.

If you’ve made it this far into the article, congratulations! Please put “42” in front of your comment so I’ll know who really read the article versus someone that just read the headline and jumped to conclusions. I am excited to see the Squadron on screen for the first time but I am very curious as to how they will be used.
