The Batman: What Matt Reeves Is Fighting For In His DC Movie

If you look back at the history of Batman on film, it’s actually very impressive. For better or worse, each filmmaker brought a part of themselves to the movies. Tim Burton brought the aesthetic only he could. Joel Schumacher brought a campy goofiness. Christopher Nolan brought a more grounded, realistic feel along with a story trenched in philosophy. Zack Snyder brought scenes ripped directly from the darker, more stylized side of the Caped Crusader’s comics.

This is something that countless others have already noticed. In fact, it’s something that hasn’t been lost on The Batman director Matt Reeves. Speaking with Nerdist, he discussed the most important thing about his Batman movie.

“I thought, ‘Well, there’s been some terrific Batman movies,’ and I don’t want to be part of a long line of Batman movies where this is just another one,” Reeves told the outlet. “I feel like they’ve been really distinctive. The best ones have been incredible. What Nolan did was incredible. What Tim Burton did was really singular.”

Reeves went on to discuss what made the various Batman films distinctive. Given the rich history the character has on film, you can’t blame Reeves for what he’s aiming for. With him standing alongside filmmakers like Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan, I understand his desire to go the other way.

Luckily, it does already feel like he’s locking down a different feel. Robert Pattinson is a bold choice for the Caped Crusader, Glasgow is a visually-striking cityscape for Gotham, and Reeves’ focus on mystery for the character is long overdue. In the past, Reeves stated that he wants this version to be a “definitive” version of the character, and I couldn’t be more excited.
