Matt Reeves Talks Batman Returns And The Dark Knight

The latest reboot of the Batman franchise has traveled down a most daunting path to arrive at its current position in the filmmaking process. Originally, Ben Affleck was set to write, direct, and star in the film. This proved to be too much and Affleck eventually left the project.

Matt Reeves eventually came aboard the film and even with the film gestating for some time before his arrival, Reeves has been in no hurry to get his Batman on the big screen. He has appeared to have had a clear vision of what he wants to do with the franchise. Reeves recently spoke with Nerdist and talked about his love of previous Batman films, you can check out what he had to say below.

“I love Batman Returns. Michelle Pfeiffer was incredible. I love it, I love it so much. It’s so incredible and she’s so incredible in it. I just think it’s such a beautiful movie. I love the Penguin stuff when he’s going down the sewers as the baby. It’s just like, wow. This is the beautiful thing about Tim Burton at his best in that way that he’s got that connection into the fantastical that feels very, very personal.

Reeves continued:

The Dark Knight is so incredible and I think that Heath Ledger’s performance and their conception of the Joker in that movie is indelible. And the battle that he engaged with, you know, with Batman/Bruce is incredible. But the thing you take away from it more than anything is that conception, specifically, I think of the Joker. That movie is so much about how it’s a horrifying thing to stare into the abyss, that idea of that level of nihilism. The whole idea that there was nothing you could do because even in the destruction of him, you were fulfilling his aims. It was just a terrifying notion that speaks to an aspect of human nature and that was really profound.”

While I like the first Burton/Keaton Batman film, I am not such a big fan of Batman Returns. For me, it’s a little too Burtony, in a word it’s, grotesque. I never really liked Burton’s version of Penguin and I just don’t feel it had the same spirit as Batman 1989.

However, I will agree with Reeves on The Dark Knight, I feel it’s a comic book masterpiece. If you made Batman a regular detective and the Joker criminal mastermind, without all the makeup, I believe it would still be a great film.

So far, I am on board with how Reeves’ The Batman is shaping up. I have no issue with Pattinson as the Caped Crusader and think he will do a fine job. The talk we’ve heard about the film concentrating on Batman’s detective skills is also intriguing.
