Disney+ Reaches Over 50 Million Subscribers

Disney CEO Bob Iger says they need to remember to entertain people and not message at them, plus they've made too many sequels.

Although it feels like longer, Disney+ only launched less than five months ago. Their initial buzz that was filled with Nostalgia and of course, The Mandalorian seemed to kind of dwindle the last few months. As of February 3rd, it had around 28.6 million subscribers. But now just a few months later, that number has almost doubled.

Disney today via a press release announced that it now has over 50 million subscribers worldwide. In the past two weeks, the streaming service has rolled out in eight different Western European countries including the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and Switzerland. Part of those 50 million paid subscribers includes 8 million from India. Where the streaming service became available last week. There it is offered in conjunction with the existing Hotstar service, which they own via Fox.

“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globe, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” said Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International. “Great storytelling inspires and uplifts, and we are in the fortunate position of being able to deliver a vast array of great entertainment rooted in joy and optimism on Disney+.”

With a lot of placed having “shelter in-home” laws currently in effect, streaming services are one of the few sources of entertainment that have thrived as they don’t require you to go anywhere. Disney+, for example, has used its streaming service platform release Frozen 2 and Onward early. It just also recently announced that Artemis Fowl will be skipping theaters and headed straight to their streaming service. It will be interesting to see if how their numbers fluctuate in the next few months.

This is no doubt an achievement for Disney+. But by no means does this even put them in the league of Netflix. As of the end of January, Netflix had over 167 million subscribers worldwide. 60 million of those in the United States. The streaming giant had A LOT more time to build their base.
