HBO Max won’t have an extensive catalog of DC movies.

I’m actually enjoying HBO Max quite a bit. While its offerings aren’t vast in quantity, there is a great variety that other services simply don’t supply. Unlike some of its competition, HBO Max likely has at least a handful of shows or movies for every mood you’re in. And as a fan of superhero movies, I was eager to find a service where I can find my favorite DC films — without having to pay for a service solely dedicated to it. Sadly, it looks like WarnerMedia is doing everything in their power to get me to fork out cash for that DC Universe service after all.

I had my first pangs of doubt when only one DC Universe series was available: Doom Patrol. No Titans or Harley Quinn. And then there was the suspicious absence of The Dark Knight Trilogy, which I assumed had to do with some rights situation. Disney had similar situations with some of their Marvel movies when Disney+ launched after all. Sadly, it doesn’t look like that’s the case here.

According to Deadline, HBO Max will be cycling out their DC movies on July 1. That’s right, you can adios to Batman v Superman, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad, Batman, Batman Return, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, Catwoman, Jonah Hex, and The Loser. All of those films will be gone in a few weeks’ time, so if you want to see them, you’d better do so now.

What’s the reason behind this? The outlet confirmed that HBO Max will be rotating their DC films in and out of the service. So, you’ll be able to catch those movies at a later, unknown date. While there has been no confirmed reason why HBO Max is doing this, it’s hard not to be cynical. With DC Universe still existing, this feels like a strategy to retain the value of that service.

Why would anyone pay for DC Universe if you can get most of its offerings on HBO Max? I can see where they’re coming from, but it’s still annoying. With HBO Max being WarnerMedia’s flagship streaming service, I was hopeful that it would be the catch-all for all of their services. Given this strategy, it seems clear they’re holding on to DC Universe, which is a shame. 

HBO Max is hungry for original content as well, and folding in DC Universe seemed like a surefire way for them to win brownie points with fans. Unfortunately, they don’t seem to think brownie points with line their pockets with more cash, and it’s consumers that get the short end of the stick in this deal.
