“We’re not really elite. We’re more like the cool scrappy underdogs.”
After dropping a teaser for the series last week, CBS All Access has finally premiered a trailer for the third series in the Star Trek franchise. Set in 2380 aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, Star Trek: Lower Decks follows ensigns Mariner, Boimler, Rutherford and Tendi, voiced by Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero, respectively.
Alex Kurtzman was pretty vocal about the show in 2019, during the CES Summit. While discussing the future of Star Trek on CBS All Access, Kurtzman described the show as skewing more adult and showing some of Starfleet’s more mundane jobs. In viewing the trailer, we can already see that waste removal on the holodeck will be one of those duties. Admittedly, having grown up in the age of Quark’s holosuites, it looked far less disgusting than I imagined.

Given that the show will skew more adult, Kurtzman was able to nab Rick and Morty head writer Mike McMahan to be the showrunner. That said, Kurtzman was clear about one thing, “It’s not that we’re doing ‘Rick and Morty’ in the world of ‘Star Trek…The key is to laugh with ‘Star Trek’ not at ‘Star Trek.”
We also know that more animated Star Trek shows are on the horizon for CBS All Access. How many? At least three more, according to Kurtzman. Those shows, however, will be geared towards younger audiences.
Concerning that last note, I’m actually pretty happy about shows for younger audiences. Some of my fondest memories growing up were watching TNG, DS9 and Voyager with my parents. On CBS All Access, both Star Trek: Discovery and The Twilight Zone, for that matter, have themes and language my young kids aren’t ready for yet. It’s nice to see that CBS won’t be reserving all of Star Trek for adults.
As for Star Trek: Lower Decks, it looks pretty fun. I definitely get a Rick and Morty/Final Space vibe off of it. I’m here for that energy. The first season will run for 10 episodes, exclusively on CBS All Access, starting 6 August.
