Star Trek: Lower Decks Gets a Stardate on CBS All Access

CBS All Access has finally announced the release date for the upcoming animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks. The first animated series for CBS All Access will premiere on 6 August of this year. Originally announced way back in October 2018, the Alex Kurtzman produced series received a two-season order and will be run by Mike McMahan, head writer of Rick and Morty and creator of Hulu’s Solar Opposites.

Set in 2380, Lower Decks will take place on a California-class cruiser, the USS Cerritos. This year puts the show just after the hay day of Star Trek: The Next Generation, shortly after Star Trek: Nemesis. At San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, producers said the series will focus on “the support crew on one of Starfleet’s least important ship.” We’ll have to see what significance, if any, that time period will have on the show and if any characters or events of note appear or occur.

CBS All Access is quickly expanding their stable of Star Trek shows with this being the third. We still have an unnamed Section 31 show starring Michelle Yeoh and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which will star Anson Mount and Rebecca Romijn and focus on a pre-Kirk Enterprise.

The show stars Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, Jerry O’Connell, Fred Tatasciore and Gillian Vigman. The first season will run for 10 episodes, exclusively on CBS All Access.
